What polyaspartic actually is

Polyaspartic is an aliphatic polyurea — a two-component resin that cures into a clear, resilient film over prepared concrete. "Aliphatic" is the part that matters commercially: it's the molecular structure responsible for the coating's UV stability, and it's what separates polyaspartic from the aromatic resins used in most standard clear epoxy top coats. It was originally developed as a protective coating for steel infrastructure — bridges and pipelines — before it moved into floor coatings, which is a fair indication of what it's built to survive. Triangle Superior uses it both as a finish system on its own and as the wear layer over an epoxy build coat.

Polyaspartic vs. epoxy: the four real differences

Both are resin floor coatings and both dramatically outperform bare or sealed concrete, so the choice isn't "good vs. bad" — it's matching properties to the floor. UV stability. This is the biggest one. Standard epoxy is aromatic, and aromatic resins amber under ultraviolet light — the yellowing homeowners notice on a garage floor that gets direct sun through an open door, or on any exterior slab. Polyaspartic is aliphatic and holds its color under UV exposure. For anything sun-exposed in North Carolina, this difference decides the job. Cure speed. Polyaspartic cures substantially faster than conventional epoxy, and it stays workable across a much wider temperature range — including cold-weather conditions where epoxy cure slows to the point of being impractical. Practically, that compresses a multi-day install into a much shorter window and gets you your space back sooner. Abrasion resistance. Polyaspartic carries higher abrasion resistance than a standard epoxy top coat, which is what you want on the surfaces that actually take wear: tire tracks, tool drops, dragged equipment, foot traffic at a door. Flexibility. Cured epoxy is harder but more brittle. Polyaspartic stays more flexible, so it accommodates the small seasonal movement and thermal expansion a concrete slab goes through instead of transmitting it into cracks and chips at the surface. On a slab with a history of movement, that flexibility is the deciding property.

Standalone system, or topcoat over epoxy — we install both

There is no single right answer, and any contractor who gives you one is selling their inventory rather than reading your floor. A full polyaspartic system — primer through wear coat — makes sense when cure speed is the binding constraint (an occupied commercial space that can't be shut down long), when the slab is fully exposed to sun, or when the substrate needs the extra flexibility. An epoxy base with a polyaspartic topcoat is the more common specification for residential garages, and it's a genuine engineering choice rather than a compromise. Epoxy builds film thickness economically and bonds tenaciously to properly prepped concrete; polyaspartic goes over the top to supply UV stability and abrasion resistance where the wear and the sunlight actually are. You get the adhesion and build of one system and the surface performance of the other. We walk the slab, test it, and specify the system that fits — then tell you which one we're proposing and why, in writing, before any work starts.

Where polyaspartic earns its place in the Triangle

North Carolina gives concrete coatings a specific set of problems: intense summer sun, high humidity, and a freeze-thaw shoulder season that moves slabs around. Polyaspartic answers most of them directly — UV stability for the sun, flexibility for the movement, fast cure for the narrow weather windows. The floors where it consistently makes sense: attached garages where the door stands open and sun reaches the slab; detached garages and workshops; patios, porches, and pool decks; commercial and retail floors that cannot afford a long shutdown; and any slab that has previously cracked or shown seasonal movement. Where standard epoxy may serve you just as well: an interior basement, a windowless storage area, or any conditioned space with no meaningful UV exposure. We'll say so if that's the honest answer for your floor.

How the install runs

Every polyaspartic floor starts with preparation, because adhesion is decided before any resin comes out of the pail. We diamond-grind the slab to open the concrete profile, repair cracks and pits, and run a moisture vapor test — coatings fail on trapped moisture more often than on product quality, and skipping that test is the most common shortcut in this trade. From there: primer matched to the substrate, the build or base coat, flake or quartz broadcast if you've selected a decorative finish, then the polyaspartic wear coat and edge detailing. We clean up and walk the finished floor with you. Return-to-service timing — when you can walk on it, and when you can park on it — depends on the specific system, the film thickness, and the slab and air temperature on install day. You'll get the actual schedule for your floor in writing with the estimate, not a generic number off a website.

What a polyaspartic floor costs

Polyaspartic runs $6–$9 per square foot installed in the Raleigh area, against $5–$8 per square foot for a comparable epoxy floor. The gap is mostly material: the aliphatic resin that gives polyaspartic its UV stability costs more than epoxy resin does, and no amount of application efficiency closes that. Where your floor lands inside that range depends on square footage, the condition of the existing concrete, how much crack and pit repair it needs, whether we're specifying a standalone system or a topcoat over an epoxy base, and the finish you choose.
